Information on Literacy
Understanding Literacy
People who struggle with reading are all around us. Often, they successfully hide their illiteracy because of shame, thus becoming vulnerable and dependent on others. Illiteracy makes everyday tasks seem impossible. Among tasks prevented because of illiteracy: taking a driver's test, completing a job application, and understanding warning labels on prescription drugs.
Reasons to Support LCWA
-
Illiteracy shuts doors of opportunity for our citizens. Literacy empowers individuals in our communities to reach their potential.
-
Illiteracy costs our communities money and is linked to crime, unemployment and serious social problems like teen pregnancy, school dropouts, poverty, and substance misuse.
-
Illiteracy stands in the way of our community’s growth. Because of the serious social problems linked to illiteracy, industry and skilled workers are not attracted to communities with a high illiteracy rate.
